Schweikher House/Indian Lakes Tour

On Saturday, June 17, 2006 Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond toured the Paul Schweikher home and studio, designed and built in 1938 on 7 1/2 acres of land with the gardens designed by noted Landscape Architect Franz Lipp. The home has been kept in original condition by its second owners, Chicago-area artist, Martyl and her husband, Physicist Alexander Langsdorf (deceased). We then visited the nearby Indian Lakes Resort by Don Erickson, student of Frank Lloyd Wright, designed in the mid-70’s as a pyramidal design of hexagon modules.

The home is built of unfinished redwood that is in amazing condition for its age

One of guides showed us around the beautiful landscape

Horizontal lines were everywhere...

Architect Jeff Whyte was our guide for the tour

One of the tour groups gathers at the long covered entryway to the home

Note the corner window and huge brick fireplace in the living room

Everyone was fascinated by the history of the home

The home was designed by Schweikher on the boat back from a visit to Japan

Jeff shows us the hidden bar

Jill and Dan Obermaier with their “new “car, and a new friend

And now for something completely different!

We have arrived in the atrium at Indian Lakes Resort

Our tour guide, CBB member Barb Padiak, shows us one of the huge penthouse suites

We got a view of the roof showing the skylights and the unusual support chains

Note the hexagonal ceiling

Hexagonal skylights over a honeycomb of hexagon rooms

The conversation pit in the conference center

At last, we make it to the Cave Bar for cocktails

We all got a little fuzzy, but the leopard pattern carpet in the Cave Bar is completely clear!
