Plus a short Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond Annual Meeting
Sunday, March 8, 2009, 1:00 p.m.
IIT Campus - Hermann Hall
Justine Jentes, director of the Mies van der Rohe Society at IIT, will give a
slideshow and talk about "Living Modern Chicago," a city-wide collaboration to
celebrate the 90th year of the Bauhaus and tell the Chicago chapter in the
international story of modernism; tours, exhibitions and public programs will
explore the movement's continuing ideal of inter-disciplinary and innovative
work intended to make a better world. In addition, Justine will discuss the newly
catalogued archives of the Institute of Design and provide an update on the
restoration of Carr Memorial Chapel, Mies' only religious building.
Grahm Balkany of the Gropius in Chicago Coalition will give a talk
about his exciting research project into Walter Gropius's forgotten
role in Chicago. The site of Gropius's physical work was
Michael Reese Hospital, which his research indicates has at least 8
buildings done with Gropius's heavy involvement.
This is in addition to his master planning for the campus and the region,
and urban design issues for the area of Michael Reese.
