György Kepes: Languages of Vision
The Works of an Art and Technology Pioneer

Paul V. Galvin Library
Illinois Institute of Technology
35 West 33rd Street, Chicago, IL 60616
January 15–February 27, 2009
Opening reception and lecture:
Thursday, January 22 • 4:30–7 p.m.
Lecture by Liz Siegel at 6pm

As an artist, teacher, and writer through his long and prolific career,
Hungarian-born György Kepes (1906–2001) worked to establish new
connections between the communities of art, science, technology, and
industry. By exploring these relationships, he became a pioneer in
new media practices, declaring that traditional art forms could no
longer adequately address the problems of the modern world.
In 1937, at the invitation of his friend and colleague László Moholy-Nagy,
Kepes came to Chicago to head the Light and Color Department at the
New Bauhaus, the design school founded by Moholy-Nagy, today’s
Institute of Design at IIT. Presenting Kepes’ paintings and photographic work,
this exhibition brings together the different phases of his career from 1930
until the late 1980s.

Liz Siegel will give a short talk at 6pm on
"The Language of Light: Kepes and the Light Workshop at the New Bauhaus"

Liz Siegel is Associate Curator of Photography at the Art Institute of Chicago and co-curated Taken by Design: Photography from the Institute of Design, the landmark exhibition/catalogue on the topic. Among her recent exhibitions are Richard Misrach: On the Beach, A View with a Room: Abelardo Morell's Camera Obscura Photographs, and Photo-Respiration: Tokihiro Sato Photographs. She received her undergraduate degree at Yale and her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago, with a dissertation on the social and cultural history of nineteenth-century American family albums. She has published and lectured widely on photography.
