40th Anniversary Tour of Lake Point Tower

Join us for a guided tour of Lake Point Tower (completed in 1968) the iconic highrise on the Chicago skyline, which is celebrating it's 40th anniversary this year. It was designed by two young architects, George Schipporeit and John Heinrich, who had studied in Mies van der Rohe's Architecture College at Illinois Institute of Technology and worked in Mies's office and for Mies in the field. The tower project also contains a 2 ˝ acre roof top park, Skyline Park, designed by renowned landscape architect and teacher Alfred Caldwell, which contains a lagoon, a waterfall, formal gardens, tree-shaded areas, a swimming pool, a picnic area and a playground. When completed in 1968, it was the tallest apartment building in the world at that time (645 feet tall).
According to resident, architect and CBB member H.P. Davis Rockwell, “Lake Point Tower was not actually inspired by Mies 1922 proposed skyscraper for Berlin, as previously reported. Schipporeit and Heinrich worked in Mies’ office in the late 1950’s, and the form developed from planning and marketing considerations. The curtain wall of bronze tinted glass and bronze duranodic aluminum is very much related to Seagram Building bronze tinted glass and real bronze curtain wall.” LPT has received several AIA Honor Awards: 1969 from Chicago Chapter - Distinguished Building Award, 1970 from National AIA - Distinguished Multi-Story Building, 1994 from Chicago Chapter - 25 Year Award.
Our host, Paul LeRoux, a resident of the building and one of its biggest fans, will start us off with a tour of the 2 ˝ acre roof top park, refreshments will be served outdoors, then we move inside to tour a corner condo that looks out to four states. We have also been invited to visit CBB member and architect H.P. Davis (Deever) Rockwell's unit in the building filled with mid-century furniture.
