Come celebrate the release of the new book, Julius Shulman: Chicago Mid-Century Modernism, produced by Chicago Bauhaus and Beyond. The book features fourteen Chicago area mid-century modern homes photographed by renowned architectural photographer Julius Shulman. Author Gary Gand will be on hand to sign books, as well architects H.P. Davis Rockwell, and Don Wrobleski, whose homes were featured in the book.

The party will be held at “House on a Bluff,” in Olympia Fields, designed and built by H. P. Davis Rockwell as his own family’s residence in 1964. It was featured in several print articles about modern architecture of the time (including Architectural Record, September 1965; Realty and Building, May 15, 1965, and Arts and Architecture, 1965.) The house, made of steel, glass, and natural river rock has many features in common with Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House and Philip Johnson’s Glass House. The landscape is integral to the design of the house, including a dramatic massive boulder in the parking court. This exclusive visit to the home is the first ever for any architectural tour group.

Our hosts will be Kimberly and Jeff Valles, owners of the house and CBB members.
