It's
time for a day trip and what gorgeous nature we'll enjoy in Northern
Indiana! We will drive by car and visit several sites to experience firsthand the
wonderful way that modernist architecture can harmonize with the
natural landscape, featuring Avant Gardens, Tryon Farm, and two private
mid-century residences in Michigan City in an enclave of unique
modernist homes.
First, we'll meet at Tryon Farm, a unique conservation community in Michigan City, south of Long Beach, where we'll be enjoy a presentation by architect and developers Ed & Eve Noonan, then tour several homes and the grounds. A light lunch will be served. Tryon Farm is a community of simple affordable contemporary houses using sustainable materials and techniques on an old dairy farm near Chicago. The houses are grouped so that two-thirds of the 170 acres will remain open forever. See how modern architecture works well with Mother Nature and how building smaller means beauty and comfort as we tour several of the houses already built for owners at the Farm. Featured in the NYT, Wall Street Journal, Dwell, Natural Home, CS Interiors as well as local press, Tryon Farm is a pioneer in modern environmental planning and design. www.tryonfarm.com
Next, we'll caravan to Michigan City where well be touring 2 private residences on the same block designed by Ken Fryar in the mid-50's, beautifully sited in naturalistic settings. Both homes have been lovingly maintained and restored by their owners who will be available to answer questions.
Our final stop will be Avant Gardens, an eco-friendly development featuring a fantastic new custom home designed with sustainability in mind. We'll enjoy a talk with developer June Kirchgatter, and The JF New Company will give a presentation on their successful and beautiful prairie restoration. Desserts and refreshments will be served. Avant Gardens comprises twenty generous home sites set on 103 pristine acres of lush woods and natural prairie. The gated community includes a private clubhouse, in-ground pool (to be built), and a 60-acre Wildlife and Forest Preserve — all reserved for the enjoyment of the residents of Avant Gardens. www.avgardens.com
Please note: attendees must drive their own cars and any carpools must be arranged on your own.

School of the Art Institute, Sullivan Galleries, 33 S. State, 7th Floor
Exhibition runs through January 9, 2010
With the world on the brink of economic and political disaster, László Moholy-Nagy and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe carried Bauhaus principles from Germany to Chicago in the late 1930s, furthering the role of experiential education. This exhibition features projects by artists and architects today who continue their legacy and a modern vision. The exhibit is a collaboration of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Mies van der Rohe Society/IIT and other cultural partners.
